Squads

At Burton Leander we aim to offer a rowing option for nearly everyone. Whether you want to try rowing for the first time, get fitter, compete at a high level, or simply enjoy recreational rows with friends and family. Below are the key squads and groups to help you find what suits you best.

Learn to Row

Ideal for beginners of any age who can swim 50 metres unaided. It’s the perfect way to learn the basics of rowing and get comfortable on the water, before choosing whether to continue for fitness or competition.

Go Row Indoors

Anyone can do it, it is great for core strength, efficient for fat burning and easy to learn and access. Our indoor rowing programme, aims to get everyone rowing whether it be for fun, fitness or competition.

Juniors

For younger rowers over the age of 11 interested in learning, improving skills, and potentially competing at age-appropriate events. We give juniors the chance to develop technique and fitness under the guidance of experienced coaches.

Training for our junior rowers includes time on the water, indoor rowing and land training to increase general fitness.

Our juniors are coached by experienced volunteers who hold up-to-date DBS clearance.

To give every young athlete the attention they need to develop, we keep the junior squad to a manageable size, allowing coaches to focus on individual progress and confidence on and off the water allowing them to progress into our club and performance squads.

Club

For rowers seniors and masters at all levels and juniors that are ready to move on from our junior squad.

Our club coaches have training plans for both winter (geared towards head season) and summer (geared towards sprint season). The squad train 4 times a week typically on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturday and Sundays. Training includes a mix of water, indoor rowing and land training consisting of running, circuits and weight training.

Club squad athletes include those wishing to train for fitness/improvement and also for those wishing to race at heads and regattas all over the country.

Performance

For those athletes of all ages who want to train seriously and race at club, regional, or national level. This is where we hone technique, build endurance, and aim for high-performance outcomes.

Our performance coaches led by Robert Laver have years of experience, with rowers from the club going on to join the GB squad. Training is comprised of coached water sessions (on over 7km of rowable river), ergs/cardio and strength training.

In the past year we have had success at a number of national events including; JIRR, British Rowing Club Championships, British Masters Championships and Henley Masters.

Over the coming years crews are already looking ahead to Henley Royal Regatta and World Masters.

Recreational

For members who enjoy rowing for fun, fitness, or leisure — without the pressure of competition — our recreational rowing group is the perfect fit. It’s ideal if you want a more flexible approach that balances comfortably around work, family, or other commitments, or if you simply love getting out on the river with good company.

Recreational rowers meet every Saturday afternoon, enjoying relaxed outings on our beautiful stretch of the Trent. These sessions focus on steady paddling, improving technique at an easy pace, and soaking up the social side of the sport. And in true Burton Leander fashion, many outings finish back at the clubhouse with tea, cake, and a good chat, a tradition as popular as the rowing itself.

This squad is all about enjoyment, wellbeing, and community, making it a great option for anyone wanting to stay active while being part of a friendly, welcoming group. If you’d like to give it a try, we’d be delighted to welcome you along.
